STUDENTS AND EXAM STRESS

Exam fever is here. The word EXAMINATION makes every student cringe, as if it is the worst thing to happen to humanity. Very often children ask their parents the obvious question – Why do we have exams at all?

Exams are not an all or none phenomenon. They are not just in the form of paper and pen tests that help decide your future based on marks and grades. 12th grade or college is technically NOT the last exam you give in your life. Examinations happen at every step of life, big or small, in various forms. Whether it’s a job interview, or making a big decision for the company, or even choosing a life partner. Life is all about exams.

But for students, till the time this truth settles in, it is important to be prepared for the exams at hand. Here are a few simple tips to help you at every step of preparation for the “big bad wolf” – EXAMINATION.

With the countdown already here, lets look at what can be done at this “last moment”

JUST A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE EXAM –

1.SELF-TESTS –

Make mock question papers out of old ones for yourself. Use an examination like setting and time yourself. This real-life stimulation should be done with all gadgets (mobiles, tablets) switched off. You can even ask your friend to make a mock question paper for you and you do the same for them.

2.REVISION –Revise the key points:

Most often we forget to revise what we have studied, just before the exam. However, it is important to do the drill before the exam as revision can help you in brushing off the key points. Notice the highlighted parts, or notes you have made for yourself.

3.SLEEP

Sleeping well is important before the exam. Sleeping helps consolidate memory. You are more likely to remember some point you read at the beginning of the year, or in class if you are well rested before the exam.

4.SELF-TALK

An easy way to stay positive is through self-talk. A positive self-talk like “I CAN DO THIS”, can go a long way in helping you to get on track and stay focused while studying and giving exams

5.KIT-KAT Break banta hai!

After 45-60 minutes of studying, walk around, stretch, drink water, freshen up and relax. If you have more time on your hands, try to listen to music without any lyrics, or simple shut your eyes and think of the present moment. Ensure that the breaks don’t last more than the actual studying period.

6.UNPLUG

Whatsapp status – BUSY! – Social media has become a necessary evil. Avoid keeping your cell phone at arm’s length while studying. This can be distracting. Rather set small alarms when you can allow yourself to use the mobile phone.

7.TALK TO SOMEONE –

Throughout history, many battles and wars have been won by simply talking and negotiating. If there is something bothering you, talk about it freely. It could be with a friend who is in the same boat, a parent, a teacher, or even a professional.
